Christians Against Poverty @ Northfield by Lynda Cooper (Taken from Church booklet)
On 10th October 2011 I found myself in Bradford ready to start my 4 days of training to
become the Manager and Debt Coach for the Bootle Centre of CAP based at Northfield
Church. What an exciting and scary time! I survived and after 4 weeks of doing local
publicity I saw my first client on November 14th. Since then my feet haven’t touched the
ground. Up until the Christmas break I had visited 8 new clients, and to date (writing this
on 6th January), I am now taking new bookings into April 2012, making a total of 18 new
clients. By the time you read this I am sure this number will have increased. It is a
privilege to visit clients in their homes, not only to help with debt management, but more
importantly to share God’s love, pray with them, witness first-hand lives being changed
and seeing the stress and burden of debt lift off their shoulders is miraculous. Once the
burden of debt has been lifted, the client’s outlook changes, they are smiling all the time,
become more talkative, share about other things that trouble them, tell us stories ... and
this is where the support of the church is vital. Befriending clients at this point in their
lives is the most important work we can do. Please become involved. I didn’t want to
neglect our clients from the last year and set about making contact with all of them and
arranging to meet. Hope Baptist Church paid for and made 25 Christmas Hampers which
were mainly given to previous clients. Thanks to Frank, Allan H and Bob for delivering
these. Even though my time working for CAP has been relatively short, I would still like
to take this opportunity of thanking everyone who has supported, encouraged and prayed
for me. A big thank you to all my Support Workers who give their time freely to visit
clients with me, you are the ones who make the visits successful.
